Q. Do you have an online program?
A. Yes. Starting in the fall of 201o, the program will be offered online. The program will run very similar and you will still be very invoveld with teams and faculty. There is no on-campus requirement where you have to come to UAB. Instead – we will be coming to where you core team is centered. Q. Is this program for engineers only?
A. No. The program is open to participants with degrees in engineering, mathematics, science, MIS, and other fields. The main requirement is a bachelor’s in a technical field and industry experience. See the admission requirements.
Q. What is the schedule of the on-campus program?
A. Entering classes start each August with a three-day seminar. Classes then meet from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays approximately once per month. The program concludes with graduation in 20-months.
Q. Is the GMAT or GRE required?
A. No standardized admission test is required. Instead the committee will review each applicants professional and academic background on a case-by case basis. See the admission requirements.
Q. When is the deadline for application?
A. The official deadline is July 1st each year. However, we encourage late-comers to go ahead and start as a non-degree seeking student. Contact the program director for more information.
Q. Is admission to the program competitive?
A. Yes. Multiple factors are considered in the admission decision, including prior academic performance, professional experience, and recommendations. In some cases, an interview may be requested by the admissions team.
Q. Is the IEM Program accredited?
A. Yes. UAB is accredited by SACS. Individual graduate programs are covered under this accreditation.
Q. Do I have to take the listed classes?
A. Yes. The IEM program is a lock step program. Each entering class takes the same courses each term.
Q. If I already have some prior non-IEM graduate courses, can I transfer them for credit?
A. No. Other courses cannot be applied toward the degree.
Q. Are programming skills required?
A. No. Courses in the IEM program do not require programming experience.
Q. If I live outside of Alabama, can I still apply to this program?
A. Yes. Out-of-state tuition woud apply. You can take the program on campus or our online option.
Q. What is the cost of the program?
A. The current total cost of the IEM Program is about $17,000. This includes 33 semester hours of credit over 12 courses resulting in a MEng (Master of Engineering) degree. An estimate of the per term costs can be found at this site.

* The cost of the IEM program includes all normal UAB tuition and fees, and a per-course IEM fee. (This fee applies to each course).
* The current IEM Fee is $637 per course, but may increase at any time.
* Fees and tuition are paid by semester to UAB. The cost of books and any lab fees are not included with this estimate, and will vary with course.
Q. How does the UAB education assistance for employees work with the IEM program?
A. According to the Policy 319 (Educational Assistance Program), tuition (not books and fees) is paid for all employees with over six (6) months of service. Currently, the IEM program does not exceed the annual tuition/hourly limitations of the policy. The tuition portion should be handled automatically without your having to file any paperwork. Some departments/managers might choose to cover the cost of fees and books also, but that is an internal decision and is not part of the policy.
Q. Are there any payment or financial aid options for IEM?
A. IEM does not have any options outside of the normal university payment options. For financial aid contact UAB Financial Aid. There is also a monthly payment plan available at UAB. For details see Tuition Payment Options.
Q. What is the Student Health Services Insurance Fee?
A. This is a fee that provides health insurance through student health services. You can waive the fee if you have existing insurance.
